The Myth Of Egyptian Gods Osiris & Isis

In all of Egyptian mythology no god is, perhaps, as revered and loved as Osiris and his sister-consort Isis. Most people are aware of the tragedy surrounding Osiris, his betrayal by his own brother Set and his subsequent resurrection brought about by the heart-broken yet persistent Isis. Alternating between the designations of the God of Love and the God of the Underworld, Osiris is also known to have been a kind and just ruler. It was he who taught the ancient Egyptians to rise above cannibalism by teaching to use land effectively. He informed his people about agriculture and its benefits. He spoke to them about tilling the land, tending cattle, and farming. It is significant that in most Egyptian paintings and works of art Osiris is represented in vegetable green. The Egyptian God Osiris is also believed to have instructed his people in the benevolent effects of religion. It was he who is supposed to have sown the seeds of civilization in Ancient Egypt.His success and innovative ways made his brother and arch-rival Set (or Seth) jealous. Set is hailed as the God of the Desert, Storm, and Violence by the Egyptians and revealed all the attributes associated with the latter. Set had his own brother killed luring him into a coffin which was hastily shut and tossed into the Nile by his sycophants. Paeans are sung on how the Egyptian Goddess Isis went about locating the coffin painstakingly and stoically. How, having found him, she lost him yet again to the machinations of the wily Set who had the corpse of his brother shattered into smithereens. A mournful Isis then went from place to place, locating each fragment and erecting a shrine in its place. Osiris, thereafter, became the King of the Dead (or the Underworld according to some scripts) and has, since, been associated with several funerary rituals, initially of royalty and later of the commoners. According to many Egyptians he was, like Christ in the Christian Era, their savior. Ultimately it was left to Isis, the Egyptian goddess and ace magician, to piece the fragments together and form the world's first mummy which she temporarily brought to life and conceived Horus.

Horus' uncle Set, not content with what he'd done to the Egyptian god Osiris, decided to destroy his nephew as well. Horus was brought up single-handedly by his mother Isis and when he came of age he was encouraged by the latter to ascend the throne left vacant by Osiris. Incited by jealousy once again, Set waged a fierce battle against Horus. The battle proved to be a long-drawn one when Re (or Ra) the sun-god intervened. He appealed to Osiris for help who declared (from the other side) that if his son were not granted the throne he would release the demons from the underworld. This seems to have silenced Set who relented.

A great propagator of religion, Horus has been hailed as the God of Balance and Harmony. His rule was one decided by the gods. During Horus' time vegetation grew and blossomed. Peace and harmony also prevailed.
